Through extensive interviews with journalists in London and Moscow, it examines the structures, organisations and political constraints that encouraged negative views of the USSR to flourish. Using Soviet and British reports of Chernobyl as a test case, it asks whether the impact of Gorbachev and glasnost improved conditions in coverage.
