Her father’s constant mantra was: ‘The further away from family, the better.’ As a result, Annette and her family followed him around the UK, then to Ethiopia, returning home to two English towns, before emigrating to the horrors of apartheid-era South Africa, which proved to be the family’s nemesis. Annette found that life had become meaningless. Her brother, Eric, found solace in drugs – at 11. It was only taking time to care for her terminally ill mother that the clear, prophetic dreams she’d had as a young girl had the space to emerge once more.
