A sulfonamide is the basis of several sulfa drugs. So a lot of work has gone into creating new sulfonamides using metal-free synthesis, which either uses sulfinate salts as intermediates or reacts amino compounds with sulfonyl chlorides. Unfortunately, the processes used to synthesize sulfonyl chlorides-such as oxidative chlorination of organ sulfur and electrophilic aromatic substitution with chlorosulfonic acid-often suffer from severe reaction conditions, a narrow range of applicability.
