"Tom Slade With The Colors" by Percy Keese Fitzhugh is a compelling narrative that follows the journey of Tom Slade, a young Boy Scout, during a time of national upheaval as the United States enters World War I. The story begins with Tom's internal conflict about his role in the war effort. Despite his eagerness to enlist and fight, his scoutmaster, Mr. Ellsworth, advises him to be patient and fulfill his duties as a scout, emphasizing that everyone has a role to play in supporting the country. Tom reluctantly agrees, promising not to enlist without permission. As the town prepares for a patriotic rally to honor those registering for the draft, Tom is chosen to represent the Boy Scouts on a committee to welcome the governor and a general. This honor fills him with pride, but his joy is overshadowed by a troubling discovery. Tom suspects that Roscoe Bent, a young man from a well-to-do family, is planning to evade the draft by hiding in a remote mountain shack that Tom had once described to him. Faced with a moral dilemma, Tom decides to forgo the honor of participating in the rally and instead sets out to find Roscoe and bring him back, believing that this is the true path of duty and honor. Tom's decision reflects his deep sense of responsibility and the values instilled in him by scouting. The narrative explores themes of courage, integrity, and the personal sacrifices required in times of war.
