This study explores the different interpretations of the ideas of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German theologian and vocal opponent of the Nazis who was executed for treason in the last days of WWII. The study analyzes the American reception of Bonhoeffer over the decades and how his ideas have been used by evangelicals, other Christians, radicals, liberals, and now by supporters of Trump. There is special emphasis on the opinions of Bonhoeffers biographer Eric Metaxas, who interpreted Bonhoeffer with a populist bent. Author Stephen R.
