Quigley cites more than 4,700 references, including material overlooked in previous compilations. The work is arranged by subject, and extensive cross-referencing and indexes provide systematic access to this body of literature. The compiler has seen over two-thirds of the references. Unique to this book is its emphasis on placing the documentation within its overall bibliographical-historical context.
