Drawing on archival materials from the 20th and 21st centuries, author Jenny Rice (University of Kentucky) argues that we need new rhetorical models that allow us to understand the multi-registered character of evidence. She uses case studies of extraordinary claims to explain why traditional forms of argument, rhetoric, and claims of bad evidence dont work against conspiracy theories, pseudoscience, and fake news. She examines how evidence works in ways that do not match up with our expected models of persuasion or even common sense. B&w photos are included.
