This institutional history of Cliffs Natural Resources, America's sole remaining independent iron producer, documents the contributions of this mining corporation and its leaders to the nation's industrial past and future. Beginning with the company's founding in the 1850s, the work examines the firm's role in developing the mining potential of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, its struggles in the Great Depression, the boom years of the World War II era, and the consolidations and acquisitions that would allow the company to weather the de-industrialization of the late twentieth century and prosper.
