Author Marjory Stoneman Douglas was a journalist and nonfiction writer, a conservationist, and an early feminist. Her book on the Florida Everglades was first published 70 years ago in 1947 and advocated for the need to preserve the Everglades. For this 70th edition, an afterword chapter examines the results of efforts to preserve the Everglades and control flooding, written by Michael Grunwald, author of The Swamp: The Everglades, Florida, and the Politics of Paradise.
