Intended as a companion volume to Neither Led or Driven, which arose from the same research project, this volume focuses on aspects of popular culture in Jamaica from the late 19th to early 20th century. But like the former volume, it is as much focused on the continued interaction with the colonial British Empire, even though the emancipation of slaves had been achieved in 1838. Moore (Africana and Latin American Studies, Colgate U.) and Johnson (history, York U.) depict throughout the continued efforts to Christianize the colony and promote "moral" behavior.
