"The Teeth of the Tiger" by Maurice Leblanc is a gripping detective novel that intertwines themes of inheritance, murder, and mystery. The story begins with the reading of the will of Cosmo Mornington, a wealthy American who has left a significant portion of his estate to his mother's family, the Roussel sisters, or their heirs. If no heirs are found within three months, the entire fortune will go to Don Luis Perenna, a friend of Mornington's who saved his life twice. The narrative takes a dark turn when Inspector Vérot, who is investigating the potential heirs, is found dead under suspicious circumstances. Before his death, Vérot had warned of a double murder planned for that night, linked to the Mornington inheritance. The Prefect of Police, M. Desmalions, is drawn into the investigation, alongside Don Luis Perenna, who is determined to protect the potential heirs and uncover the truth. The plot thickens with the introduction of Hippolyte Fauville, a civil engineer who claims to be in danger and connected to the Roussel family. As the story unfolds, the characters navigate a web of deceit, danger, and intrigue, with Perenna at the center, using his wit and skills to solve the mystery and prevent further tragedy. The novel is a testament to Leblanc's mastery of suspense and his ability to craft a complex narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats.
